Disability Discrimination Act
You may be wondering if the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) affects your business. Anyone who is a service provider has certain responsibilities under the DDA. A service provider is defined as offering a service which is directly available to the general public. This includes companies from single operators to multinationals, and it doesn't matter if the service is provided free or is paid for, companies must still comply.
It is unlawful to refuse to serve a disabled person for a reason which relates to their disability, to offer a sub-standard service to disabled people or to provide or offer a service on different terms.
Businesses must make reasonable adjustments to ensure that disabled people can use their services. One of these adjustments is to provide additional help or assistance when required, such as providing written material in alternative formats.
There are two million people with a visual impairment in the UK, can you afford to ignore them?
